JANUARY 5, 1959 – MAY 28, 2021

A devoted father and husband, a cherished brother and son, and a friend to all who knew him, Donald Gene Schultz got his angel wings May 28, 2021 after a courageous and selfless battle with cancer.

Don was born in Plentywood, MT, Jan, 5, 1959, the second-born of Richard and Jean Schultz into what would grow to be a loving family of six brothers and one sister, all of whom looked up to Don as he looked out for them.

His early years were spent playing sports, and jostling with and fishing with his brothers in lakes and rivers in Montana and North Dakota. He graduated in 1977 from Dawson County High School in Glendive and worked in the construction industry there, before moving to Laurel to build his father’s house in the early 1980’s. There he settled after meeting the love of his life, a beautiful, kind, and fun-loving redhead named Robin Frickel. On September 10, 1988, the lovebirds married and began their fulfilling and adventurous life together, welcoming with overwhelming joy two daughters, Rebeca in 1992, and Rylee in 1996.

To say that Don and Robin are devoted parents would be to understate their love and commitment to providing for every need of their children, while enjoying every moment of their childhood years and beyond. Cheering on their daughters at sporting events and activities was the main item on their daily calendar. They are proud parents and raised happy, loving, responsible, and spirited children, much like themselves. The same gleam in their eyes for their children was likewise seen for their two grandchildren, Keaton and Bennett, sons of Rebeca and Nate Weaver.

Don is a builder. He began developing his skills as a teenager in helping his father and brothers salvage two train depots. The wood depot in Worden, MT and the brick depot in Sentinel Butte, ND stand there no more, reincarnated into the family’s home on Lyndale Avenue in Glendive in the mid 70’s. From there, Don’s construction career would involve every faucet of home building. For the last 25 years, Don specialized in custom cabinetry and communities in Montana and Wyoming will display his professional handiwork for years to come. You’ve probably encountered some of it even today.

His skill in the workplace made him pretty handy around the house, too. He loved taking care of his family’s home, doing the yardwork, and hosting family events. The entire family has many fond memories of Thanksgiving holidays and other times spent with Don and Robin.

Softball, bowling, hunting, and watching sports were also among Don’s favorite pastimes, but they all took a backseat to boating, fishing, and recreating in the great outdoors. At times, though, his golf game DID NOT take a backseat to his passion for fishing. Don enjoyed the company of family and friends at home, in the wild, on the water, and on the golf course, too.

More than just a pastime, Don was an avid reader, devouring books of many genres, but especially history, fantasy, and science fiction. His many hours spent reading fueled his intelligence, conversations, wit, and humor. Some would say he was quiet at times, but others knew he was merely waiting for just the right time to place that piercing zinger on you -- and his roaring laugh had to make you smile.

Don, you are gone too soon from all those who love you, and your presence will be greatly missed, but we carry your memory with heartfelt fondness and love. Your family feels at peace knowing that you are in the care of the God who loves us all, and who laid down His life so that we could all have rest assured.

Don is survived by his wife and absolute best friend of more than 32 years, Robin, his children Rebeca (Nate) Weaver, Rylee (fiancé Danny), grandsons Keaton and Bennett Weaver, in-laws Rhonda & Bruce Lefler, and Karla & Rod Reisinger, father Richard, mother Jean, brothers Dan (Denise), Tom (Lloie), Gaylon (Kathy), Guy (Dawn), Paul (Sheri), Peter (Michelle), and sister Jennifer (Al) Heber, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 26 at 10 a.m., at Smith Funeral Chapel, 315 East 3rd St., Laurel. Interment will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery, with a remembrance and celebration of life afterwards at 1208 Beartooth Drive, in Laurel.

In lieu of flowers, please make your memorials to an organization of your choice or to Frontier Cancer Center and Blood Institute, Billings, MT.

The family would like to give a special thanks to St. Vincent Healthcare, Frontier Cancer Center, and RiverStone Health Hospice.
