Mari was a devoted wife and loving mother of six children. She was born in Cleveland Ohio and at the age of 6, when her mother died, Mari lived and went to school at St. Joseph's Orphanage through the 8th grade, then lived with her aunts until she graduated from public high school.
Mari traveled throughout the U.S. and in 1953, she met and married Clarence (Smokey) Owen while in California. Smokey, a Red Lodge native, and Mari moved to Montana where they raised 6 children in Glendive and later Livingston. They returned to Red Lodge in 1978.
Throughout her life Mari was quite active in church and community events and organizations, which included Festival of Nations, Fourth of July events, the Lions Club, Beartooth Hospital Pink Ladies, Red Lodge/ Roberts Senior Center, 4-H club leadership, St. Agnes Church and the Victory Girls.
When Mari's children were older, she worked for Tobin Adjustment and Nevin's House of Glass, in Livingston, and as a cook at both the Red Lodge Cafe and Red Lodge Senior Center. She made the BEST pies.
Mari was very outgoing and had a sense of humor. She would often tell funny stories and corny jokes. She enjoyed reading, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, word games, traveling, and tending to her yard and flower garden. She loved animals, especially her little dog “Harmony”, and kept the birds in her yard well fed. Hummingbirds were her favorite.
Mari loved children of all ages, especially the disadvantaged, and was a consistent contributor to the Shriner's Children Hospital and St. Judes Children's Hospital. For many years she taught children to dance for Italian night at the Festival of Nations.
Mari will always be remembered for her loving devotion for her family and friends. She is survived by her husband Clarence, six children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews too numerous to count.
She was preceded in death by her 3 brothers, John, Phillip and Joe Sperli, grandson, Glenn F. Merritt III, age 21, and great granddaughter, Katie Ida Owen, age 22 months.
Memorial services will be held at St. Agnes Church at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 5, 2021. A private interment will be held at a later date.
Instead of sending flowers, please make donations to either St. Jude's Children Hospital or Shriner's Children Hospital, in Mari's name.
