Obituary for Patricia Ellen Terland (Westerhaus)

Patricia Ellen Terland of Columbus passed away at the age 92 on April 22, 2021, to be with her Lord and Savior. Born on May 23, 1928 in Stillwater County to Gustav and Nettie Westerhaus, she was raised on a farm north of Reed Point and graduated from Reed Point high school in 1946. She married Pete Terland on Sept. 14, 1947. They ranched at various locations near Townsend, Big Timber and Columbus. Pete was hired by the Montana Power Company at Mystic Lake in 1957. From there they moved to Holter Dam and finally Columbus in 1962. Pat began working in the Stillwater County Treasurer’s office in 1967 and later split her time between the Assessor’s office and Treasurer’s office until accepting a permanent position in the Assessor’s office where she was deputy assessor until her appointment as assessor in 1982. She served in that position until 1986, and then filled in as deputy assessor until her retirement in May of 1987. Mom was an incredibly talented woman and had many hobbies. A much-loved Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt and friend to many, she will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Billie, sister Margaret, grandson Justin Overcast, her husband and many friends. She is survived by her son, Gene (Adelia) Terland of Columbus and daughter, Judy (Don) Overcast of Chinook, 4 grandchildren and 11 great grand children and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will occur at 2 pm, May 22 at Smith Funeral Chapel in Columbus. The family expresses their appreciation to the staff at Meadowlark Assisted Living for the care they provided Mom. Memorials may be made in Pat’s memory to the Special K Ranch.
