Helen Esther Kirkegard passed away on March 25, 2021 in Butte, Montana. She was born in Froid, Montana to Holger and Mary Jensen on September 6, 1927.
Helen grew up in Froid and completed her education there. She met the love of her life James ‘Jim’ Kirkegard and they married on November 1, 1948.
After marrying, Jim and Helen moved to Circle, Montana where they operated the family farm. They were blessed with two children, Nancy and Larry. The couple raised sheep for many years. Helen loved to tell stories of how she cooked for harvest times and for the many sheep shearing crews that came to help over the years. When they were not farming, the couple spent endless hours scouring eastern Montana at rummage sales, auctions, and junk stores to find salt and pepper shakers. Helen and Jim acquired nearly 3000 sets, and Jim built display cases in their home so they could enjoy them every day.
Helen’s grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved to tell anyone who would listen about their accomplishments. Playing cards and bingo (and winning) kept her busy in her later years. Also, coloring beautiful pictures that she shared with all her family and friends became a hobby that she enjoyed. Helen had many special friends who came to play cards with her. Karrie Eaton and Sky and Tara Jones were like adopted grandchildren to Helen.
The number of hours Helen spent on the phone with her sisters is unimaginable. She loved visiting with old friends and family.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Jim, her parents Holger and Mary Jensen, and her sisters, Lois, Lillian, and Laura.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy and husband Tom and their two children, Becky and Jim; her son Larry and his children, Levi, Harley, MaryAnn, and Susan; her great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Maddox, Skyelor, Izzak, Keiton, Kallie, and Jake; and her sisters, Jean Gartside, Mildred Battin and Bonnie (Dale) Good, along with many nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery in Circle. Condolences for the family may be shared at www.smithfuneralchapels.com.
