On Thursday, September 3rd we unexpectedly lost our husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Jon James Brown. He was born on December 22, 1946 to James and Ruby Brown in Billings, Montana. He grew up on a ranch south of Absarokee, with his sister, Jani, and their grandparents Helmert and Tillie Arthun. He attended Absarokee schools and graduated in 1965. After High School, he attended the University of Montana, joined the National Guard, and served 10 years.
On September 6th, 1969, Jon married Gloria Yates in Absarokee. They raised 4 children, Tony, Tanya, Brian, and Nate.
Jon’s professional life took him down a few paths. He started his career working in radio and TV in Billings, MT. He then purchased a grocery store, owning and operating Jon’s Food Town for 5 years in Belfry, MT.
A majority of his career was spent with Farmers Union Insurance, running The Jon Brown Agency in Columbus, MT. He spent many of his days traveling in his Big Red Van to serve clients in rural Montana, which also fostered numerous friendships along the way. He helped many people he never knew by volunteering on the board of HRDC Billings for over 30 years.
Jon really enjoyed spending time with family and his best days were found in the little things. Whether it was working on model trains, or attending hundreds of games, he loved watching and being with his kids. He also appreciated great food and took pleasure in cooking meals, baking cakes, and making his famous “egg cakes” for his family.
In his later years he was able to travel and made great memories on family trips to Wyoming, Maine, California, and Norway. Jon was always ready to spark up a conversation with friends and strangers that he met near and far.
Jon was loved by so many and “Papa Jon” will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and parents. He is survived by his wife, Gloria, children, Tony Brown- Rawlins, WY, Tanya Rome (Jacob)-Billings, MT, Brian Brown (Marissa)-Billings, MT, Nate Brown (Lacey)-Rapid City, SD. Grandchildren, Tye and Benjamin Brown, Spencer and Travis Rome, Bailey and Mia Brown. Step-grandchildren Dan Rome and Jessany Sandine. He is also survived by his sister Jani McCall, sister-in-law Jeanette Taylor, brother-in-law Fred Yates, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place with a private graveside service. A celebration of life with friends and family is being planned for 2021.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a donation to District 7 HRDC (Human Resources Development Council), or The Kid’s Club of Columbus.

My heart breaks for your loss of such a great man. I’ll not only miss his maroon van cruising around town but even more so the times we got to visit with one another. Every conversation revolved around is love pride in his family as well as our Columbus community. He had a sparkle in his eyes that could like up any room. Jon Brown will never be forgotten. You are all in my thoughts and prayers!!!
