Our cherished mother, grandma, great-grandma, and friend – our Nana – passed away peacefully on the morning of September 7, 2020 with her family by her side.
To plant a memorial tree in honor of Barbara George (Edmonds), please visit our Heartfelt Sympathies Store.
Barbara was born March 21, 1935 to Wayne and Verna Edmonds in Billings, MT, the oldest of 3 siblings. She spent her childhood years in the towns of Billings, Red Lodge, and Kinsey while her high school years were in the Absarokee, MT area. It was during those school days in Absarokee where she met a handsome rancher’s son from nearby Roscoe and fell in love. Stan and Barb were married in December of 1955 and began their extraordinary life together.
As it surely suited her kind and caregiving nature, she chose nursing as her profession and graduated as an RN in 1956. Four years later she was hired at The Billings Clinic where she began a remarkable career. She thoroughly enjoyed her work and would retire 34 years later from the same place she began. Prior to beginning her nursing career, two became four as they had their daughter Sandra and son Darwin. Although they lived in Billings, most weekends were spent in Roscoe and Absarokee where many treasured memories were made.
Barb enjoyed gardening as well as her two favorite games – Golf and Bridge, and it was while participating in these activities where she cultivated lifelong friendships. These friends would also serve as her and Stan’s many travel partners. Cruises with lifelong friends and excursions through Montana with their Bridge crew were times she looked forward to and cherished.
Whether as a nurse, friend, mother or grandma, our Nana always took care of people. She was kind and humble and easy to laugh. She did not like being in the spotlight, but any gathering was not the same if she was not there. She will be missed dearly by those who loved her.
The family wishes to thank The Billings Clinic. Their dedicated nurses and doctors were there over the years to help Barb fight cancer four different times. Thanks also go to Stillwater Hospice and Home Helpers for their compassionate care and concern over her last days. Finally, thank you to all friends and family who were there to celebrate the joys of her life.
Survivors include her brothers, Ron Edmonds (Janice) and Ken Edmonds, her daughter, Sandra Atkins (Bill) and her son, Darwin George (Teresa), three grandchildren, Guy Atkins, Lyndsy Jorden (Derek), and Jared Atkins, and three great grandchildren, Grayson, Gavin, and Parker Atkins. Special in-laws, Patricia George, Ilsa Edmonds, and Ruth Atkins as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews and many special friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Stan, their parents, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the charity of your choice. A graveside service will be planned next summer at the Roscoe Cemetery.
