With deepest sorrow, we announce that James Fredrick Coburn, aged 17, our most beloved son, brother, grandson, family member, and friend, passed suddenly on Sunday, June 14, 2020 in a car accident.

James was born July 10, 2002 to Steven and Stefane Coburn, of Billings, Montana. He was raised on the family ranch.

James loved all aspects of ranch life. By the age of 13 James could run all the equipment as well as any adult and better than most. He loved working and farming on the ranch, absorbing much of his knowledge from his grandfather Lyndon, whom he cherished.

James loved everything to do with water. Along with his brothers Casey Lynn and Christopher, and sister Shelby, he fished and swam at every opportunity. His love of animals was lifelong. At the age of 7, he successfully smuggled a cat into his room, hiding it from his father in hopes of keeping it. Unfortunately, the kitty cried while James was at school, thereby letting the cat out of the bag. It was also around that time that he would frequently coerce his mom Stef, brother Chris, and sister Shelby to visit Fuddruckers. Not to eat, but to feed the ducks.

James was a great hand on a horse while working cattle, or just riding with his brothers for fun. One of his biggest passions was riding dirt bikes with his brother Chris.

James was also fearless. At the age of 6, he convinced his dad to hook a rope to the big John Deere to pull him and Chris on their snowboards.

James always had a smile on his face and loved joking with friends and family, able to turn a day of work into a day of fun.

The relationship James had with his brother Chris, was unlike any other. James always looked up to Chris, even before he could walk. They were absolutely the best of friends. In January 2020, James met Elena Nelson, the love of his life. Soon Chris and his girl Casey, with James and Elena became a foursome. Always together, always planning for tomorrow.

James loved and adored his mother Stefane, spending many days and evenings with her, talking, laughing, listening to music, fishing, and just being together.

James was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Joann Deines Coburn, and his maternal grandfather Paul Fredrick Henke.

He is survived by his mother Stefane Henke Coburn (Brent) and his father Steven Lynn Coburn (Annette). Also, his sister Shelby Coburn, his brother Christopher Coburn, his brother Casey Lynn Coburn, his maternal grandmother Michelle Henke Smith, his paternal grandfather Lyndon Coburn (MaryAnn), all of Billings. Also, Grandmother Jinger Henke of Eureka, MT, and stepsister Whitney (Tyler) of Billings. He is also survived by 6 cousins, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Those who knew James, even just a little, have lost a shining light in their lives.

For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. ROM.8 V38-39

My heartfelt condolences to all of James' family. He will be missed by anyone who met him even once. I will forever have the memories of being in our kitchen and seeing Elena and James hanging out there together in absolute happiness. Both smiling ear to ear and the laughter was so contagious. I does my heart good to know that they found each other.

As difficult as this is to say, I'm grateful neither had to deal with the loss of the other. Two days before the accident, Elena and I spent the day shopping for a few things for her senior pictures. We talked and laughed all day. The one thing she absolutely had to do was stop by Ace Hardware, where she worked, to get some treats for James dogs and ice cream sandwiches for her best friend Casey. She also helped me pick out an umbrella for my patio table. I picked it up on Saturday. All four of the kids, James, Elena, Chris, and Casey came over Saturday night for a bbq. When they left, I got a hug and an "I love you" from each of them as they walked out the door. James came running back in because he couldn't find his phone. He wanted me to locate it. It was in Elena's car and she was at home by then. He gave me another hug and as he was running out the door, he said "Bye mom, love ya".

James loved to listen to music that had meaning to him. Music that made him think of a particular family member, friend, himself, and Elena. He would always say "You've got to hear this song!" If you said anything while it was playing, he would listen patiently. When you were finished talking to him, he would start the song over. It did not take long to get the hint. The song "I'm Your'n" by Tyler Childers was very special to him. That one made him think of Elena.
