David Wayne Schmalz, 68, passed away January 25, 2020 in Salt Lake City, UT due to cardiac complications. Viewing will be held on Monday, February 3 from 1 to 7 PM with Rosary at 7 PM all at Smith Chapel Downtown, 925 S. 27th St. Billings. A Funeral will be held Tuesday, February 4 at 11AM at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 226 Wicks Ln. Billings with burial to follow at Pleasantview Cemetery in Ballantine.

David was born to Chris and Irene Schmalz in Dickinson, ND. He grew up in Killdeer, ND on the family farm. He was married on March 24, 1973 to Barbara Kay Holwegner in Fromberg at the Catholic Church. He had five children Jeffery Schmalz of Red Lodge, Tamara Schmalz-Greeling of Worden, Brian Schmalz of Laramie, WY, Kevin Schmalz of Billings, and Sheila Schmalz of Ballantine.

David was a union ironworker and an AWS (American Welding Society) CWI (Certified Welding Inspector). He made many life-long friends through the ironworkers union. After retiring, he bought a farm in Ballantine where he enjoyed farming grass alfalfa hay and raising cattle. He always enjoyed working with his neighbors and fellow farmers and ranchers. He also loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them throughout the years. David was always kind and giving always helping, and lending a hand to his family, friends, and anyone in need.

He was preceded in death by parents Christian and Irene Schmalz; and brother-in-law James Holwegner.

He is survived by his brothers, Don (Becky) Schmalz of Cody, WY, Joe (Kate) Schmalz of Shepherd, Jim Schmalz of Shelley, ID, Doug (Brenda) Schmalz of Minnetrista, MN, and Chris (Linda) Schmalz of Fort Worth, TX; three sisters, Alene (Kent) Bahl of Minot, ND, Annette Grohs of Lino Lakes, MN, and Carol (Al) Rebsom of Shepherd; mother-in-law Mary E. Holwegner of Billings; brother and sister in laws John Holwegner of Sheridan, WY, David (Lonnie) Holwegner of Casper, WY, Dan (Lenna) Holwegner of Sheridan, WY, RoseMary (Don) Biddle of FL, Paula Holwegner or Billings, Linda (John) Larson of Powers, OR and Teresa (Randy) Lyytinen of Park City; grandchildren, Andrew Schmalz of Billings, Christopher Nava of Ballantine, Ryan and David Nava of Worden, Mariah Schmalz, of Ballantine, Aliyah Saylor of Ballantine, Olivia and Keaton Schmalz of Billings, and Kylee and Beau Schmalz of Laramie, WY; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
