Elna Margaret Cullen Saur left this world to join her husband, Bill Saur, in the arms of Jesus on October 13, 2019 in Billings, Montana. She died of natural causes at St. John’s Nursing Home surrounded by family.
Elna Margaret Cullen was born May 26, 1927 in Marsh, Montana to Chester Cullen and Christina (Sackman) Cullen. She attended grade school in Marsh, middle school in Fallon, and high school in Glendive, Montana. She pursued a teaching degree at Dawson County Community College, but didn’t finish because of an issue with her vision.
She married William (Bill) Fred Saur on December 21, 1947. They moved to Billings, MT in order for Bill to pursue his career in accounting and construction management. Together they raised 5 children. Elna stayed home and was a true homemaker. Bill and Elna chose to help raise two foster boys: Willy Springer and Kevin Hill.
In 1955 when Bill’s sister and husband were in a terrible accident, they took in Anita and their nieces as their own. She provided hospitality for family and friends and was a hostess to numerous missionaries when they traveled through the area. The contact with missionaries in the home was a contributing factor to the interest her children and grandchildren have in foreign ministry.
Her love for reading the Bible and desire to grow in her faith was evident by her daily readings. Elna showed her love for Jesus by teaching flannel graph Bible stories to children in her home through Child Evangelism Fellowship, being a leader for Bible Study Fellowship, and by serving in various roles in each of the churches she attended.
She prayed daily for her family and friends. Elna could be described as a prayer warrior. If anyone had a specific prayer request, they would merely ask Elna and she would pray in earnest. She loved people and always was willing to listen, without interruption or judgment. Her smile, sweet demeanor, and contagious sense of humor will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her five children: Tim (Marily) Saur of Vancouver, WA; Tom Saur of Sheridan, WY; Ted (Denise) Saur of Sacramento, CA; Tina (Mark) Eumurian of Oakdale, MN; and Toby (Lisa) Saur of Billings, MT; 12 grandchildren: Alisa Saur, Timothy Saur, Christina(Steve) Papoulias, Ben(Anastasia) Saur, Adrienne(Vladimir) de Caballero, Joel Saur, Sasha Saur, Isaac(Tracey) Saur, Jacob Saur, Shawna Eumurian, Blaque Saur, Sam Saur and 6 great grandchildren. She is survived by her two step brothers Don(Noreen) Hohensee and Bob(Mardell) Hohensee.
She has been preceded in death by her parents, brother Larry, and husband Bill of 67 years.
The family would like to give a special thanks for the care given to her by all of the staff at Jensen Cottage (St John’s United).
Donations in her honor can be given to Bible Study Fellowship or Child Evangelism Fellowship.
