Born and raised in Billings, he was doted on by his sisters, LaVina, Luella, and Jean. Vernie was a proud U.S. Veteran of both the Navy and the Army. Undoubtedly the smartest decision he ever made was to marry Judy Trumbo July 21, 1962, and to them, Debbie, Kris, and Dale were born.
Although he received training as a mechanic, he spent most of his years as a truck driver, retiring from Northwest Transport in 1996.
Vernie was a man with a tremendous work ethic, who never knew a stranger, and was quite the jokester. He was a loyal teamster and devout democrat who would argue politics for hours!
Vernie loved Pepsi, milk, hunting and fishing, keno, classic country music, golf, coffee with his friends, onion and potato sandwiches, the Packers, the Dodgers, and CNN. The only real thing he hated was Fox News!
However, more than anything, he loved his family. After retiring he became the family’s “mother hen,” checking in with everyone numerous times each day to find out what they were doing, and making sure they were ok and where they needed to be. He was never happier than when he was with his family - especially his grandkids.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, LaVina (Joe) Zahn, Luella Hoppe, brother in law, Dale Trumbo, and infant granddaughter, Tess Paquin. He is survived by his sister, Jean (Gene) Cunningham, wife, Judy, of almost 57 years; his children, Debbie (Larry) Hart, Kris (Pepe) Paquin, Dale (Deana) Kilfoy; nine grandkids: Lindsey, Leslie, Jennifer, Scott, Brynn, Kennedy, Bailey, Riley and James; special adopted granddaughter from Germany, Lydia Höfelmayr; 11 great grandkids, and one great-great grandson on the way.
