Lois Elaine (Storkel) Tallman was born March 27, 1930 in Culbertson, Montana to
Herman and Hildur (Swing) Storkel. She was the youngest of 6 children and spent her
early years in Fort Peck, Glasgow, and Red Wing, Minnesota. From age eight until high
school Lois lived on the family farm in Carlyle and then moved to Wibaux where she
excelled in studies, piano, and friends. After graduation Lois attended nurse’s training
in Aberdeen, South Dakota where she met the love of her life, Jim Tallman, on a blind
date. A few months after meeting, at the age of 19, Jim and Lois were married on April
21, 1949. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage on Easter Sunday.
Lois and Jim spent their early years working in Montana, Minnesota and North Dakota
with Jim’s family painting business – The Tallman Brothers. Lois was fearless helping
paint the grain elevators but Jim lost his sign-painting assistant when the two started
their family. The couple raised their five children in Wibaux and Glendive, Montana.
About twenty years ago Lois and Jim moved to Billings, Montana where they resided
until Lois’ death.
Lois adored her husband and children and above all wanted to live a life that blessed and
encouraged them. Years ago, when discussing her eventual funeral, Lois said, “I want to
be a picture of Jesus to those in my life…the whole purpose of my life {is that} people
would come to know the Lord.” She lived to reflect the love of the Lord no matter what
she did.
There are many stories and words to describe this amazing woman – and not enough
space or time to explain how very much she meant to her family and friends. So, a few
words: compassionate and passionate, fun-loving with a delightful sense of humor,
deeply committed Christ-follower and truth-seeker.
Lois was a pianist, singer, speaker, jeweler-store owner, Bible-study teacher, artist, poet
and word-smith, house re-modeler (she could swing a hammer), gift-giver, and encourager.
She loved studying and sharing the Scriptures.
Lois showered those around her with her love and care and, along with Jim, was devoted
to praying for her family and all others who came into her life.
On April 19, 2019, Lois died peacefully. What a joy it must have been to see her Savior
face-to-face on Good Friday. We are certain she was welcomed into heaven by her son,
Lois was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Craig; her parents-in-law, Had and
Martha Tallman; her brothers, Kenneth (Florence) Storkel and Conrad; her sisters,
Beatrice (Ben) DeTienne, Phyllis (Wayne) Bailey; Aimee (Howard) Finkle; niece Penny;
and nephews Ken and Ron.
Lois is survived by husband, Jim; daughters: Michelle (Rollin) Brask; Corrine (Greg)
Cross; Laurie (Brian) Huotari; Wendy (Dean) Dubinsky; fourteen grandchildren, twenty
two great grandchildren (and twins on the way); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lois legacy will live on through her family and the lives she touched.
