Marvin Dean Oelkers was born to Russell and Maren Oelkers on August 31, 1928, in Culbertson, Montana. On October 4, 1953, he married his “pretty Luft girl”, Hulda, in a double ceremony with his brother, Stanley and Hulda’s sister, Rose! Three of the Oelkers men married three Luft women, and as the saying goes, “lived happily ever after”!

He was inducted into the service March of 1951. Marvin managed the Culbertson lumber yard from 1953 through 1967. He moved his family to Billings, Montana, and worked for Boise Cascade. From there, he built homes with Jack Beals, and then Randy. He later sold homes for Capp Homes. After retirement, he accepted a Christmas help job at Ace Hardware, and continued working there for 20 years! He mostly enjoyed visiting with the customers, and joking with staff.
In 2015, Marvin and Hulda moved to Wyndstone Senior Living Community, where they thrived in their independent living apartment. He made many new friends there.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Hulda, children Shelly Lindh (Jerry) and Randy. His grandchildren and great grandchildren are Jeremy Lindh, Justin Lindh (Candice) (Isaac), Brittany Baker (JJ) (Kylar, Kenzey, and Aubree), Brandon Oelkers (Abbey, Brody). Preceding him in death was his daughter, Diane Pastian.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16 at the Atonement Lutheran Church. Condolences may be shared at smithfuneralchapels.com.
