Rita Colleen (Barber) Dernbach joined the lord on Thursday Feb. 7, 2019.
Colleen was born in Powell, Wyoming on Jan. 21, 1944 to Robert and Ruth Barber. She graduated from Powell High School and Eastern Montana College (Billings) where she met the love of her life, Stephen Dernbach, in chemistry class. She and Steve were married August 2, 1969 in Lewistown and moved to Whidbey Island, Washington where they had four children together. After raising her children, Colleen taught second grade at Olympic View Elementary in Oak Harbor, Washington for 17 years. After many travels, she and Steve moved back to Billings in 2004 where she was an active parishioner of St. Pius Catholic Church and an avid volunteer in the community.
Colleen was always busy tending to the needs of others. Countless friends and strangers know her love and kindness through her good works and generosity. She would send 6 – 10 cards full of words of encouragement every week to friends and family – it was said that she must have owned shares of Hallmark because she sent out so many.
Colleen is preceded in death by her mother Ruth (Wilder) Barber and her father Robert Barber.
She is survived by her husband Steve Dernbach; her four children, Gary (Annabelle), Brian (Joanna), Heidi, and David; her four grandchildren, Ashley, Chase (Kayla and Beckett), Taylor, and Broady; her sister Karla Gorrell (Don) and her brother Tom Barber (Barbara). In addition, she leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends and family.
A Vigil service is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Smith West Chapel, Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2019 at St. Pius in Billings.
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Colleen and Steve were a godsend to my family as mom went through her medical treatments and finally her passing. I will always treasure the time we spent in the hospital cafeteria, drinking coffee and visiting to pass the time. The beautiful cards and words of encouragement she sent are still appreciated today. My heart is broken for you all and I am praying that God holds you all in the palm of his hand.

God Bless,
Ruth Tresch Mortag

Colleen was a shining Christian. She did not just talk the talk, she walked the walk. I was so blessed, and thank God, for her friendship and presence in my life. I first met her when she and Steve came to AZ for the winter. They had a little place across the street from us. We are both Quilter’s and talkers so we became very fast friends. We shared conversations, quilting time, projects, meals, celebrations and family. She was always available with that effervescent personality of hers to comfort or celebrate. I loved her. I will always remember her. She will be a part of me forever. Gary and I send our condolences to Steve and the whole family. Our prayer, dear God surround them with your love, that they may not be overwhelmed by their loss, but have confidence in your goodness, and strength to meet the days to come. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Colleen (Gisela to these loved ones) will be sorely missed. She and Steve (Dieter) were wonderful life long friends. My mother and Colleen worked together at the Billings Clinic for years. ... a wonderful spirit, she will not be forgotten... ever! May God forever bless her in the Kingdom of Heaven.
