Boyd Johnson, 86, Billings, passed away January 23, 2019. Born to John M. Johnson and Borghild (Hansen) Johnson, near Dutton, he attended school in Choteau. When he graduated from high school, his only thought was to join his father in dryland wheat farming. A good friend intervened, explaining he was too smart not to go to college, and helped to get him on the path to Northern Montana College in Havre. He transferred to MSU in Bozeman and earned his Agricultural Engineering Degree. After college he served in the Army during the Korean War, stationed in Straubing, Germany. Before his career with Bureau of Indian Affairs in Billings, he had several jobs, including Caterpillar in Peoria, IL and Soil Conservation Service in Sidney, MT. A proud Norwegian, he was a member of Sons of Norway. Also, having had open-heart surgery in 1986, he is among few who lived 32 years post-surgery. He enjoyed traveling and dancing and had a capacity to enjoy life. He was a person of quality, generous to a fault. If he could help a person, he had achieved his goal. He is preceded in death by his parents, his three sisters and their husbands, Joyce and Reuben Depner, Shirley and John Bilbro, Iola and Kenneth Brown, his youngest son, Anthony Johnson, and his daughter-in-law, Claudine Johnson. Five children survive him, Gregory Johnson (wife Sandy), Manchester, NH, Crystal Johnson, Brussels, Belgium, Naomi Lochner (husband Stephen), San Francisco, CA, Rodney Johnson (wife Merci), Anchorage, AK, Jerry Johnson, San Jose, CA, and six grandchildren. Memorial service at 10:30am April 26 at Smith West Chapel, 304 34th St.W. Interment at 10:30am April 27 at Choteau Cemetery, Choteau, MT. Memorials are suggested to Sons of Norway, Jotunheimen 499, P.O.Box 22564, Billings MT 59104-2564 and American Heart Association, P.O. Box 742030, Los Angeles CA 90074-2030. My Dad was the last surviving person from his family. Survived many ordeals and navigated through health crisis that most people would succumb to (such as open heart surgery). His passing has created a significant loss and will be missed. Rest in peace.

Boyd was an acquaintance I met working in the Engineering Branch at the BIA. A very knowledgeable guy about many subjects. Fun to be around because I think he enjoyed being around people. I hope his Caterpillar Stock paid off. Our Norwegian heritage and my experience around construction equipment seemed to give us common ground.
My condolences to the family I know he was very proud of you all and loved you very much.

Boyd was a great friend. 28 years ago I had invited a few friends to my place in the country for the weekend and he was the only one to show up. He taught my Son and I how to play poker and we had a great time. More recently I went to his appartment to help him sort some paperwork. We again had a great visit. He spoke fondly of his Son who was coming to visit soon.
He really was a great guy. I know you will miss him.
