Obituary for Mary Esther Gilg (Schoolcraft)

Mary Esther Schoolcraft Gilg, 82, an independent resident of MorningStar Senior Living, passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at the Billings Clinic due to an unexpected surgical complication.
Mary was born the daughter of Thomas “Glenn” and Mary “Janet” Carlson Schoolcraft in 1936 in Casper, Wyoming.  She was raised in Casper, and graduated from Natrona County High School in 1954, where she participated in orchestra, National Honor Society, and Latin and English clubs.  She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado Boulder in 1958.  She belonged to the Kappa Delta social sorority (serving as President during her Junior year) and Beta Sigma, an honor society for female business students.  She was employed by Pan American Petroleum in Casper as a secretary from 1958 to 1962, and by the Galloway Township School Board in Pomona, New Jersey, as a clerk-typist from 1979 to 1980.
She married Joseph George Gilg of Vestal, New York, in 1961 in Casper.  She was a homemaker, and participated in the PTA, classroom activities, and Cub Scouts.  She moved with her family through Wyoming, Maryland, and New Jersey before settling in Billings in 1980.  She and Joe enjoyed square dancing, and were members of the Sage Brush Swingers Square Dance Club in Billings.  At MorningStar Senior Living (independent living), she had many friends, helped lead exercise classes, and faithfully walked three-quarters of a mile every day.  She loved painting, going on drives through the mountains, hiking trails, and looking for wildflowers.  She was artistic in everything she did, and enjoyed crafting with the extended family.
She is survived by her three sons Thomas (and Donna) of Oregon, Timothy (and Rose) of South Dakota, and Charles (and Kandy) of Billings; four grandsons Matt (and Liz), Chris, Madison and Quintin; great granddaughter Ellianna; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Mary in death were her husband Joe, and her parents Glenn and Janet.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 4th, at Smith West Funeral Chapel, 304 34th Street West, Billings. The family suggests remembrances be made to the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
