Bonnie Jean Harper (Balstad), 80, of Billings, Mt., received her heavenly body on Dec. 4, 2018. Bonnie was born on February 8, 1938, to Kristoffer and Eva (Clayton) Balstad in Livingston, Mt., and grew up on ranches in Clyde Park, Mt. Bonnie contracted Polio at the age of 13 (1951) and spent a year at the Shodair hospital in Helena. Bonnie was very smart and strong willed, and she was determined to never let the debilitating effects of Polio hold her back. She attended school in Clyde Park and graduated in 1956 and then moved to Billings to attend the Business College for 2 years. After college, she worked for the Vocational Rehab. Office, the Director of Transportation, Mutual of Omaha, and finished her career with Dr. D.V. Galloway. Bonnie loved to attend her Clyde Park High School reunions and maintained lifelong friendships with her classmates.

Bonnie married Norman Harper in 1961 and they had 3 children, Teri, Pam and Jay. After her divorce in 1969, Bonnie purchased a home on Eldorado Drive where she raised her children and lived independently until her accident. Bonnie was grateful for her extended hockey family and loved to reminisce about all the tournament trips. She valued her family and friendships and although Polio took most of her voice, she continued maintaining her relationships through emails. Bonnie’s strength and determination to never be a burden was admired by everyone and she was a true super hero in our eyes! Her life was extremely difficult, yet she rarely complained. She was always ready to hear a good joke, her laugh was infectious, and she kept her sense of humor until the day the Lord called her home. Bonnie was surrounded by her 3 children and granddaughter at the time of her death.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, Kris in 1975 and Eva in 1985. She is survived by her brother, Chris (MaryAnn) Balstad, and her 3 children, Teri (Jerry) Cribbs, Pam Strietmatter, and Jay (Shonna) Harper. She is also survived by her only granddaughter Kelsey (Jared) Butler, her 2 step grandsons, Joshua (Jill) Weinreich and Matthew Madison, and her 5 step great-grandchildren, Keyonna, Corallee, and Kinsley Weinreich and Lexei and Link Madison.
Bonnie’s service will be held on Saturday, December 15th, 2018 at 2pm at Smith’s Funeral Chapel located at 304 34th St. West in Billings followed by a celebration of life at the Knights of Columbus at 2216 Grand Ave. in Billings.
