Obituary for Marie Haskell

Marie Haskell went to her Savior, October 7, 2018. She was born on October 10, 1920, in Winsted, Minnesota. Her parents, Joseph and Katherine Rathmanner had eight children: Clem, Alex, Elizabeth, Jerry, Ralph, Delores, Clifford, and Marie. All proceeded her in death.

Marie attended high school in New Prague, Minnesota, and after graduation, married Mathew Campbell, a veterinarian. Marie was mother to seven sons: Patrick, Billy (both died in early years) Michael, Jack, Timothy, Marty, and Nick. She was also her husband’s accountant, and managed the Blue Note Ballroom, a nightclub in Winsted.

The family relocated to Billings in 1970. Matt continued practicing veterinary medicine, and was also a state meat inspector. He passed away in 1982.

Marie married Bill Haskell in 1983. They spent special times between his farm in Laurel, Nebraska, and Billings. In Laurel, a new family of relatives and friends bonded with her lineage in Billings. Bill and Marie traveled the world together.

Marie enjoyed the card table. Her years playing bridge and “spite and malice” became a rewarding part of her life and helped cultivate another circle of friends who provided companionship and joy.
Her card partners became her family.

She was a devout Catholic, seldom missing mass. She was generous to a fault, volunteering well into her 90’s at St John’s. An avid Mustang and Cornhusker fan, Marie’s true sports passion erupted whenever her grandkids were on the court. She was their ultimate cheerleader on and off the field.

Marie was an exceptional cook. Her holiday table burst at the seams with wonderful meals. She would often extend invitations to lonely souls without a place, and gladly sit at the “kid’s table” to make room. One never heard a complaint from her, only gratitude for all her blessings.

Survivors include her sons- Mike(Erika) Campbell, Jack Campbell, Timothy Campbell, Martin(Pat) Campbell, Nick( Renee) Campbell, grandchildren- Laura, Matt, Sara, Lynn, Leah, Alex and Andrea, great grandson-Matthew, numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank West Park Village for the compassion they provided during her stay and end of life care through Compassus. Memorials can be sent to St. Thomas Catholic Church.

Funeral Vigil- Monday, October 15, 7p.m. at Smith Downtown Chapel, 925 S. 27th Street.
Funeral will be held Tuesday October 16, 10am at St Thomas Church.
Interment to follow at St Pius Church Columbarium.
