Obituary for Betty L. Bourne (Gram)

Betty L. Bourne, 95, Bismarck, ND, formerly of Billings, MT died Sept. 18, 2018. Betty was born May 22, 1923, to Oscar E. Gram and Anna Bjerken Gram in Fallon MT, the seventh of nine children. Her father was transferred often and she lived in Fallon, Glendive, Terry, Forsyth and Billings, graduating from Billings High School in 1940.
Betty married James Bourne Feb. 4, 1945 in Billings. They had six children and she was a homemaker for the next eighteen years. Her career as a travel agent began in 1963 when she and her husband bought S.M. Cook Travel Service which they owned and operated until his death in 1974. She moved to Sidney, MT and was the owner and manager of Betty’s Travel until 1983 when she returned to Billings. As a travel agent, she had traveled extensively in the U.S., Hong Kong, Great Britain, Mexico, Europe, and the Caribbean. In 1979, Betty earned her Certified Travel Consultant designation from the American Society of Travel Agents, her proud accomplishment.
In her retirement, she enjoyed spending her time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Grandma Betty enjoyed card games, was ruthless in “Sorry,” and made the best chocolate chip cookies.
Betty had an unwavering faith in the Lord. Her faith never faltered as she met life’s challenges head on knowing God had a plan for her. She was intelligent, stylish, had a wonderful sense of humor, silly, loved to read, and above all, was always gracious. She was a stubborn Norwegian who didn’t know how to ask for help, and was one of the few that actually liked lutefisk. Betty was one of the world’s biggest Bronco fans. Game day often included her Bronco shirt, ice mug, and John Elway bobble head. She loved sports and knew the players and rules of most of them. She especially enjoyed going to her grandchildren’s games. Betty was a proud American and instilled that love of country in her children. She voted in every presidential election since she became of age, 19 in all. Lipstick and earrings were essential before she went anywhere including her final journey home.
Betty moved to Bismarck, ND in 2010 and resided at the Good Samaritan / Augusta Place until her death. Our family would like to extend our thanks to the CNA’s and nurses of Augusta Place for their care, with a special thank you to Lisa and Nicole for their loving care of our mother and our family in her last days, and to Sandy who kept track of her for the last eight years. She cared deeply for so many of them as they had become family to her.
Mom was preceded in death by her husband; sons Jim Jr. and Ron; her parents; sisters Jean Dickson, Avis Carlin, Doris Dahlman, Augusta Griggs, Evelyn Wallace, and baby Adelaide; brothers Lloyd and Oscar; sons-in-law Bill Embry and Donald Olson; and great-grandchildren Madeline Reed and Ryeli Embry. Mom was the last surviving member of her family.
Survivors include her daughters Christi (Wayne) Papke, Mandan ND; and Serina Olson, Billings; sons Tom (Kristene), Edmonds WA; and Brad, Denver; daughter-in-law Myra (Merlyn) Herold, Henderson NV; sisters-in-law Betty Nile, Hysham MT, and Mary Ruth Slater, Plymouth MA; 15 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will take place at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 328 South Shiloh Road, Billings, Saturday, October 6 at 11 AM followed immediately by a luncheon. Burial will be at Terrace Garden Cemetery, 304 34th St. West following the luncheon.
