Obituary for John "Jack" Sannon

John "Jack" Sannon
Jack Sannon died peacefully on Sept. 23, 2018 two days shy of his 88th birthday. He was born to John and Leona (née Swartz) Sannon in Red Lodge.
He met his best friend, Darlene Leigh, to whom he was married for 24,779 days and would “not trade for anything even if he got boot.” They met on the school bus in Broadview, and were married in 1950, shortly before Jack joined the Army to serve in Korea.
Jack was a hard worker with an entrepreneurial spirit. He owned and operated his first truck as a teenager, a business he continued until the onset of dementia in his 80s. He could be seen driving around his truck sporting the words “Sannon Trader” on the side. There wasn’t a place he could go where he didn’t recognize and strike up a conversation with an old friend, or make a new one.
Jack was a land developer, an American Horse Show Steward, creator of S Bar S Distributing (in the 1960s) and was a founding member of the Northern International Livestock Exposition (NILE).
His true passion was his family. Jack is survived by his wife of 67 years, Darlene; children, Rick (Donna) Sannon, Susan Ogi, Jim (Shellie) Sannon, Toni (Randy Latterell) Sannon, and Jeff Sannon; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; and sisters, Barbara (Stephen) Vanderleest and Nancy (Glenn) Klein.
He is preceded in death by his infant grandson, Jordan; sisters, Connie Laughrey, Kay Boltz and Judy Horner; and brothers, Dick Owen, and Alan “Bud” Sannon.
A Celebration of Jack’s life will be held at 10 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 5, at Smith Funeral Chapel, 925 S 27th Street Billings, MT 59101, with Pastor Bill Goben and Josh Skidmore are officiating.
We’ll miss you, Grandpa Jack, but we’ll take comfort in knowing that you’re smiling and looking down on us saying “one heck of a family.”
