Obituary for Richard "Trapper" Martin

Richard "Trapper" Martin
Richard “Trapper” Martin was born in Billings on Oct. 4, 1946, the sixth of seven children of Thomas and Helen Coop Martin. He passed away from cancer on Sept. 16, 2018.
Trapper attended Limestone Elementary School and graduated from Absarokee High School. He worked a variety of jobs before serving in the Army from 1965-67. He landed in Vietnam on his 20th birthday in 1966.
After returning from Vietnam, Richard married Cathy Hanson and they had daughter Andrea. (Richard and Cathy later divorced.)
Richard worked as a government trapper in the Polson area before returning to Stillwater County to fill the same position with Wildlife Services. From 1968 and until retiring in 2011, he trapped everything from grizzly bears to wolves and was known for his skills at catching wily coyotes. He could frequently be seen driving the backroads of Stillwater County in his pickup, often accompanied by one of his Airedale dogs.
Trapper married Judy Jacobsen in 1983 and they had son Tom in 1985.
He loved horse packing in the mountains with his friends and had a reputation for lashes that were guaranteed to hold tight. He had a special affection for his pets, a singular knack for cooking and he enjoyed sharing the fruits of his garden. But above all he loved his family and was particularly proud of Andrea’s and Tom’s accomplishments.
Known for his wide circle of friends, Trapper was a great teller of jokes and stories and the Martin home was busy and open to anyone who stopped by.
Richard felt a life-long bond with his “brothers” in the C Company 3rd Battalion 8th Infantry 4th Infantry Division, with whom he served in Vietnam. After returning home, they held reunions every two years for more than 50 years.
Richard was a member of the Stillwater Masonic Lodge #62.
Trapper was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Helen and his brother Theodore. He is survived by wife Judy, daughter Andrea (Derek) Doles, son Tom, brothers Keith (Katherine), Robert, David, Chuck (Maggie) and sister Mary (Duane) Hudson and also many nephews and nieces.
Trapper’s funeral will be held at 11 am, Sept. 22, at the Columbus Middle School Gymnasium. Interment will follow at the Nye Cemetery and a luncheon and celebration of Dick’s life will take place at the Nye Firehall.
Memorials can be made to St. James Lutheran Church in Columbus or the Nye Community Center in Nye. Condolences may be shared with the family by visiting
