James A. Shannon passed away on July 31, 2018, joining his wife Edelle who passed away seven months earlier.
Jim was born on September 9, 1929 in Noble, IL to William P. and Bernice (Piper) Shannon. Following the divorce of his parents, he spent his early years with extended family eventually moving to Billings, MT with his mother and two younger brothers.
Growing up during the Depression Era, he developed an entrepreneurial nature and had many accounts of boyhood business ventures with his brother Jack. He was intelligent, well-read, funny and loved to travel. All of these served him well during a long career with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co that spanned twenty-one years and seven transfers. Later, he and Edelle owned and operated Shannon’s Tire Centers in California and Montana. They retired early and spent many happy years in Arizona and later at Mission Ridge Retirement Community in Billings.
Jim and Edelle Christianson were married in Billings on December 31, 1948, and their daughters Sharon and Shirley, soon followed. Through this marriage he acquired his wife’s closely knit family whom he referred to as “The Gang” and happily recollected many years of reunions and vacations.
He was honorably discharged from the Army and proudly served in the Naval Reserves, retiring in 1989. He was a dedicated husband and father whose determination and hard work provided his family the life he never knew as a boy, far surpassing any childhood dreams. He will be greatly missed.
Preceding him is his wife Edelle whom he deeply missed; daughter Shirley; niece Charmaine Shannon Burns and his wife’s four siblings.
He is survived by his daughter Sharon Shannon; son-in-law Keyth Koppinger; brother & best friend Jack Shannon (Donna), Billings, brother Jerry “Gus” Shannon (Judy Frink), LaJolla, CA; brother and sisters-in-law: Jerry Kostelecky, Geraldine Christianson and Helen Christianson; and many nieces and nephews.
