Obituary for Walter "Butch" Marten

Walter "Butch" Marten
Walter Julius Marten came into the world on January 11, 1943. He was the first child for Walter R. and Roziland Marten. They nicknamed him “Butch” and that is how he was referred to in the Marten family.
Walt grew up in Great Falls and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1961. He then went to school in Missoula, graduating with a Masters of Art and Biology degrees. He was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. There he met the love of his life, Sharon Lee Stark and they married soon after.
Walt entered the army and was a Lieutenant training troops to go to Vietnam. They lived in Ford Ord, California before finally returning to Montana.
Walt was a ranger in Glacier Park during many summers. He also became an art and biology teacher, teaching in Fort Benton and Columbus, MT. In the 1980’s he became involved with Rocky Mountain Fur Company and loved to Rendezvous. He built his own teepee and painted it. On a dare, he felled a 40’ tree and carved it into a dugout canoe. He built four of these and one is on display at Pompey’s Pillar. He was an integral part of the Lewis and Clark exhibition there.
Walt was a wonderful artist. He painted, etched, carved and did many more artistic things. He was passing that on to his grandson, Brett Patrick. They spent many hours painting, hunting and learning together.
Walt was a lover of camping, carving, golfing, and anything to do with his grandson Brett. He also was heavily involved in the Compassionate Friends after the loss of his son Brett Jared in July, 1997, and a member of Atonement Lutheran Church.
He passed away on July 28th, 2018 of a broken heart after my mom died on July 3rd. Sometimes there is nothing to mend that.
Walt is survived by his daughter Brandy Marten Hunt; grandson Brett Patrick Hunt; sister Kathy Byrne (Paul); brothers Robert Marten (Ellen) and Carl Marten (Sandy); cockapoo Sassy; and many extended relatives and friends.
The memorial service will be at Atonement Lutheran Church, 1290 Sierra Granda Blvd on August 11th at 11:00 a.m. A light luncheon will follow. Memorials may be made to Atonement Lutheran Church or The Compassionate Friends, PO Box 50395, Billings, MT 59105. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting
We love you Papa and hope you are playing your flute next to Magan and Big Brett in Heaven.
