Vivian "Bambi" Munson
Vivian (Bambi) Munson died after a courageous battle with multiple health issues on May 5, 2018. On her final day of life, she did the things that brought her joy. She won a game of Scrabble, presented a bouquet of thank you flowers to the caregivers at Hansen Cottage, and even went shopping with her daughters and granddaughter.
She was born in Minneapolis, MN on November 18, 1931. She was raised there, but spent summers in Froid and Shepherd, Montana. As a young girl she rode the train by herself to visit her grandparents and extended family in Montana. She continued to love riding the train into her eighties. Her Aunt Dorothy Heidema in Shepherd became her role model, second mother and mentor. She was cared for by the Heidema family, where in her own words “it was the first time I had a real family of my own.” Most importantly, she was given spiritual roots in the New Apostolic Church by her Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Pete Heidema.
She met the love of her life, Ray Munson, in 1951. They were married on June 1, 1953 in Billings and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2013.
Bambi lived a full and active life. She was a cheerleader at both Shepherd High School and Eastern Montana College. She taught for one year at Acton Country School, then at Pompeys Pillar Country School and finally at McKinley Elementary School in Billings. Bambi left teaching to raise four children. She went back to Eastern Montana College when her children were in junior high school to earn her degree in library science. She was a librarian at Will James Junior High and then at Riverside Junior High for nine years.
Bambi’s home was always filled with music, laughter and joy; it was a hub for church, family and neighborhood gatherings. Bambi was happiest when serving and helping others, and her home was a refuge for many people. In their golden years, Ray and Bambi travelled all over the world and took annual trips to Florida and Mexico, making lifelong friends along the way.
Bambi dearly loved her family and is survived by children David (Jackie) Munson, Rae Lynn (Lynn) Jordan, Roxanne Munson (a.k.a Maria Hart), and Dan (Patty) Munson; grandchildren Andrew (Michele) and Tyler (Berenice) Munson, Angela and Brian Jordan, Jonathan, Mark (Bridgette), Karen and Jessica Cernan, Holly Hagenauer (Andrew); and great-grandsons Raylen and Finn Munson. She was preceded in death by her husband Ray, mother Myrtle Barrington, father Lloyd Larson and mentor Aunt Dorothy Phair.
We want to extend a special thank you to the staff of Interim and St Johns for making her last few months so pleasant and comfortable. You made it her home.
The funeral service will be held Saturday May 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.at the New Apostolic Church, 500 15th Street West. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Apostolic Church Youth Fund at 3402 Waterloo Circle, Billings MT 59101 or charity of your choice.
