Richard "Dick" Shay
Richard Dean “Dick” Shay passed away in his home on April 26, 2018 of natural causes.
He was a son of Ethel Shoop Shay and Harrison Street Shay of Laurel, MT.
Dick grew up on the family farm 3 miles west of Laurel. As a child he suffered from dyslexia and treatment was unknown at that time. He persevered and attended Hawthorne Country School and later graduated from Laurel High School in 1950.
He was inducted into the Army in 1951 and served active duty in Korea for 1 year 3 months and 20 days during three of the most deadly battles. After his honorable discharge he returned to Laurel and worked for the Cenex Refinery.
In Laurel, on March 18, 1967, he married Jean Marie “Joe” Montee. In 1972 they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Richelle Lynn “Rikkie”. In 1987 the family moved to Billings where he retired in 1990.
Dick was a charter member of Laurel DeMolay, a fifty year Mason, and a member of the Al Bedoo Shrine.
Dick was compassionate and only saw the good in people. He had an unconditional love for his family and friends. Many people were touched by his kindness and generosity.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Harrison, his siblings; Neil Shay, Virginia Warren, Donald Shay, and Wallace Shay, his grandson, Harrison Dean Shay, and several nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his wife, Joe, daughter Rikkie (Rick) and grandkids Eullie Shay, Derek and Nick Blumhagen, and Erica Jager.
Visitations will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Smith Downtown Chapel. A graveside service with military honors will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2 at Mountview Cemetery. Everyone is welcome. Reception to follow at 29 Lexington Dr. Billings, MT.
