Obituary for Herman "Don" Murray

Herman "Don" Murray
Herman “Don” Murray, age 93 of Billings passed away peacefully on Nov. 26, 2017. He was born on Feb. 3, 1924 in Bismarck ND and was the last of 6 children born to Charlie and Anne Murray of Beulah ND. Shortly after graduation from Beulah in 1942 he joined the US Navy and became a pilot. After serving in WW-II, Don married his high school sweetheart Cornelia “Corky” Lennick in 1946 with whom he spent 60 loving years. He loved horses, dogs, sports, hunting, and had a passion for serving people. Don and Corky were blessed with four beautiful children, eight grandchildren one of whom they raised, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Don aspired to become a veterinarian while attending Colorado State University for four years, however providing for his growing family at the time became necessary so they moved to Billings in 1950 where he took a position with Ralston Purina. Don worked most all of his life in the livestock feed business for Ralston Purina and Cargill serving farmers, ranchers and Hutterites. Don had exceptional knowledge in animal husbandry and won many top sales awards with Purina in the 70’s and 80s. After leaving Billings in 1968, Don’s work took his family several different places including Scobey, Fort Benton, and Conrad, MT. Don and Corky moved back to Billings from Conrad in 2000 when Don retired.
Don is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Cornelia; brothers Paul and Glenn; and sisters Verdie, Betsy Deane and Ferne.
He is survived by his children - Warrine (Dennis) LaPierre, Karen (Eric) Johnson, Brad (Ren) Murray, and Don Murray; his grandchildren - Shawn Murray, Chad Jackson, Christine DiVenere, Katie Hansen, Shane Murray, Allie Murray, Angie Inman and Kelly Murray and numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM on Friday at Smith Downtown Chapel with military honors and interment at 12 noon at Yellowstone National Cemetery. Condolences may be shared with the family at smithfuneralchapels.com.
