Richard "Rich" Prokop Jr.
Richard “Rich” Michael Prokop, Jr., was called to Heaven on Thursday, September 7, 2017, after battling advanced heart failure. Rich loved life, was full of life, and lived life fully. He loved people and did not know a stranger. He was well known for his larger than life personality, his jokes and pranks, and his willingness to always lend a helping hand to others.
Rich was born August 30, 1962, in Glasgow, Montana, to Richard “Dick” and Frances “Darlene” Prokop. He graduated high school in Custer, Montana, where he met, later married and spent over 35 wonderful years with his high school sweetheart, Sharon “Shari” Gotschall Prokop. Together they were blessed with their beautiful daughter, Kailey, one of his greatest joys.
Rich worked for the Montana Highway Department of Transportation and recently retired after almost 29 years of service. During his tenure at the Montana Highway Department, he served as a section supervisor of the Hysham-Custer section, and was instrumental in developing the Professional Training Academy for Heavy Equipment. Along with working at the Highway Department, Rich was a farmer and rancher.
Over his lifetime, Rich was also a volunteer fire fighter, officiated basketball, and served as a board member of the Custer Public School.
Rich enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, going on four-wheeling trips, spending time on his ranch, and he was an avid supporter of high school sports. He was also a huge Montana Grizzly football fan and a die-hard Seattle Seahawks fan.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Shari, his daughter Kailey, and his siblings: Ron (Margie) of Billings, Sheryll (Mark) of Chandler, AZ, Rob (Charlene) of Custer, Cindy of Gilbert, AZ, and Stacey (Todd) of Chandler, AZ; his sister Susan's fiancé, Chris Fisher of Michigan, his sister-in-law Janine Gotschall of Columbus, and his brother-in-law Gary (Nadine) Gotschall of Laurel; his nieces Makiah and Emily and his nephews Jonathan, Garrett, Logan, and Carson. He was preceded in death by his father, Dick, his mother, Darlene, and his sister, Susan.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. at Faith Chapel (chapel entrance on Broadwater). Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Smith Downtown Funeral Chapel, 925 S. 27th Street, Billings, MT.
